This website/blog is for anyone who is interested in birding or birds. Although I now live in Wisconsin, and no longer spend my days birding in Alaska, I am still birding, much of the time. For a number of years, doing birding big years was my passion. I did my first big year in 2003 in Texas. In 2005 I did another Texas big year and observed 522 species (still the record, I believe). In 2008, I did an ABA big year and totaled 723 species. You can read about it in Extreme Birder: One Woman’s Big Year. After I moved to South Dakota in 2011, I did a South Dakota big year (350 species) and a couple of Pennington County big years. After I moved to Alaska in 2014, I realized that I needed the excuse of doing an Alaskan big year so that I could more thoroughly explore the birding wonders of the state. So, I did another big year in Alaska in 2016, and found 307 species, which was (is?) believed to be the state record. In 2022 I did a Wisconsin big year. I wrote about comparing big years in TX and AK in Big Years, Biggest States: Birding in Texas and Alaska (2020). I also wrote and illustrated Birds in Trouble (2016). These three books are available from the publisher (Texas A&M University Press), or signed copies of them may be obtained from me.
More recently, I have written a book on owls (A Charisma of Owls) and another generally autobiographical book, mostly in rhyme (Birding Times, A Life in Rhymes). The owl book will be published January 27, 2026 and the rhyme book was published in February 2025.
See the “Lynn and Her Books” Page on this blog for more information on these five books and the “Shop” page to purchase them.

Shortly after we moved to Wisconsin in early 2021, I was contacted by the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology (WSO), which, as is usually the case with nonprofits, was desperate for volunteers. I joined the WSO board in the spring of 2022 and became its VP for a two year term. Then in May 2024, I became the WSO President (another 2-year term). Since then, along with the other board members and volunteers, I have been involved with and have worked on the annual WSO convention, the new WSO annual “Unconvention,” and the new WSO strategic plan and projects coming out of this plan. All of these efforts are aimed at WSO’s continuing mission of “promoting the enjoyment, study and conservation of Wisconsin’s birds.” The organization and its mission fit well with who I am and want to be.
Ever since I began to do international birding (1992) and then to do birding big years (2003), I have enjoyed doing slide shows (and then PowerPoint shows) about birds and birding and about my travels and adventures. Should anyone who reads this blog be interested in the possibility of having me speak on just about any bird-related topic, please contact me (see above). I do not charge an honorarium, but do expect to have my expenses covered (e.g., travel, motel stays, etc.).
